Invest in proper dental supplies to keep the dentist's drill away

Good oral hygiene is not only important for its obvious aesthetic benefits, but also to maintain proper overall health. Many scientific studies have linked bad dental hygiene to major disease conditions like diabetes, stroke, coronary heart diseases, cancer, and difficult pregnancies. According to ADA (American dentist’s association), proper oral hygiene starts at home, which makes investing in proper dental supplies all the more important.
A huge variety and brands of dental hygiene products are available in each and every medical store today, each one promising you a perfect set of pearly whites, which only makes choosing the proper dental supply all the more difficult. Here is some information on major dental supplies that will help you identify the worthy from the gimmicks. Dental supplies available in medical supply stores fall under two major categories, medical dental supplies like drills, water jets, sterilizers, etc., which are basically used by dentists and other medical care givers. They have a more curative purpose than preventive. However, as we all know, prevention is always way better than cure, so, what we will discuss today is the use of daily use dental supplies that help maintain proper oral health and keep the dentist’s drill away. These products include regular care toothpastes, tooth brushes, dental creams, flossing kits, and more. We will discuss some important daily use dental supplies to illustrate the importance of proper dental supply usage.
1.Toothbrush: Gone were the days when there were only 2 types of toothbrushes – infant size and adult size. Today, there are hundreds of styles, sizes, and shapes available in the market and each one has a different set of features, so which one should you use? Well according to most dentists, soft bristled (to protect your gums while removing debris from teeth) and small headed (better to reach the hard to reach part of your mouth) toothbrushes work the best. The rest of the features like electric or manual, style of handles, shape of bristles, size of the brush, etc. are all to enhance your comfort while brushing teeth, so choose the one that suits you the best depending on the size and shape of your mouth. Remember that the toothbrush too can harbor a whole load of bacteria as it ages, so replace your toothbrush every 2 to 3 months or as it starts to show signs of aging, whichever is sooner.
2.Toothpaste: Toothpaste is basically made up of a mixture of special quality sand, detergent, minerals, antiseptics, and flavors. Whatever type of toothpaste you use, it should be able to remove debris and plaque and kill germs from your teeth. Dentists usually recommend a fluoride-based simple mint flavored toothpaste for regular use. Overuse of abrasive chemicals present in stain removing or teeth-whitening pastes can damage the enamel of your pearly whites, hence use them with caution. Use special children’s toothpaste for children below 6 yrs of age and avoid toothpaste for children less than 2 years of age.
3.Dental floss: Can you believe this? Google has 841,000 pages dedicated to dental floss suppliers in USA! Dental floss simply helps remove plaque from the hard to reach crevices between your teeth. There are 3 basic varieties of dental floss – conventional floss, flossers, and floss threaders. So, which is the best dental floss to use? The answer is, the one that you are most comfortable with. However, dentists recommend floss threaders for those with fixed bridges or dental brace.
4.Mouthwash: Mouthwash or mouth rinse, like all other dental supplies, are available in a large variety. When you choose a mouthwash, the first criteria should obviously be the deodorizing chemical used. Check if you are sensitive or allergic to any of the chemicals used in the mouthwash. Some mouthwashes use alcohol as a main ingredient, which can be a cause of concern is the mouthwash is swallowed, hence decide if you want a alcohol-free mouth rinse, and lastly the flavor of the mouthwash – obviously you don’t want your mouth to smell of something you dislike.
So, the bottom line is we all have just one set of permanent teeth. Care for them dearly and use your common-sense and logic before choosing a new dental care supply.
